Regional Economic Strategy

The Regional Economic Strategy (RES) is the blueprint for the economic development of England's Northwest. It is the foundation for everything that the NWDA does. The current RES was launched in March 2006. It sets out a clear vision for the region’s economy and identifies specific priority actions to meet the economic challenges and opportunities of the next ten years and close the economic gap with the rest of England. The Vision for the RES is:

“A dynamic, sustainable international economy  which competes on the basis of knowledge, advanced technology and an excellent quality of life for all.”

This Vision is supported by three major Drivers.

Firstly the region needs to improve productivity and grow the market. Secondly, the region needs to grow the size and capability of the workforce. Thirdly, the region needs to create and maintain the conditions for sustainable growth and private sector investment.

The Vision and Drivers are underpinned by five key Themes:

  • Business
  • Skills and Education
  • People and Jobs
  • Infrastructure
  • Quality of Life

While its implementation is led by the Agency, the RES is the strategy for the whole region. It was drawn up by an advisory group of 25 private and public sector partners, following extensive and inclusive consultation with over 4,000 organisations.  LEP represents Lancashire on the advisory group.

The successor to the current RES, the RS2010, is in development and will be launched in 2010.
